Deaf Seniors Program, Magothy UMC
The Deaf Seniors Program (DSP) has become a vital ministry at Magothy Deaf Church. The grant received from Global Ministries supports the goals and objectives of the DSP and the overall mission of the Deaf church. One Deaf senior recently said, “I really enjoy coming to the church, feeling supported, and learning.” What she is learning comes from the monthly education seminars. For instance, the grant helped the DSP to recruit presenters who spoke about: Deaf Scams, Seniors Staying in the Home Longer, Public Benefits for Seniors, and the New Tax Law, among others.
While the DSP helps to involve Deaf and hard of hearing seniors of the church be active in volunteer work, it meets its goal of connecting the church with the Deaf community in a new way. This DSP has also engaged the seniors in outreach efforts by serving by serving families in transition at a local soup kitchen. Along with this, it adopted a Deaf group home (for Deaf adults with chronic mental illness) over the holidays.
Magothy United Methodist Church of the Deaf is grateful for the support from the United Methodist Committee on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ministries for partnering with us being in ministry with the Deaf community. Thank you Global Ministries!
