Deaf Autism Camp, 2018
Deaf Autism camp was held June 29 to July 1, 2018, at the Retreat Center of Camp Pecometh in Centreville, MD. This was the second year for this Deaf Autistic Family Camp. The goal of this camp is to provide spiritual nurture and support for families with autistic Deaf children.
During the camp, parents talked with Deaf professionals about Deaf education options. The group experienced worship, and the children learned Bible stories including two episodes of Dr. Wonder's Workshop (a Christian Deaf version of Sesame Street).
A parent who had successfully raised a Deaf child came and gave testimony about her journey. Parents had a chance to share with each other their stories and concerns. Parents learned how to “play” with their kids (Jingo, swimming, boating) and how to improve communication.
The camp ran for 24 hours. The environment of getting out the city and experiencing fun in the sun with comfortable beds and dining hall services was a treat for all.
The funding helped make it happen and this camp will continue in the future. It met a huge need for this very isolated community. This year we had a new Spanish speaking family come. They are from Honduras and the mother is a refugee who is seeking asylum. We had a volunteer Spanish interpreter to facilitate her participation as well as the other Spanish-speaking family.
We had 8 campers and 5 parents/guardians. There were also professionals in the field of special needs deafness and a spiritual guide (bishop). The camp staff helped with boating, swimming, crafts, meals, hayride, etc. The van driver was particularly helpful in picking up these families from all over the city.
Your grant of $1,000 helped to pay provide for some of the many expenses of the camp (transportation, crafts, room and board, supplies, swimming time, boating time), and we are grateful for the support from the United Methodist Committee on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ministries for partnering with us being in ministry with the Deaf community. Thank you Global Ministries!
